Question:

Getting child benefit?

I'm a bit confused about applying for child benefit.

I gave birth last week and this is my first child.

However I have 3 step children (my husbands children his wife died shortly after having the youngest).

He was already claiming child benefit for them when we met and married.

Normally the child benefit is payed to the step mother but we never changed it and he was claiming it.

I'm confused as how I should claim for the new baby.

Its my first child but its our 4th child.

So should I claim for a first child?

Or should he be claiming for a 4th child?

(I'm in Ireland by the way but if you're in the UK I'd be interested to hear if you were in similar situation because It works sort of the same over here)

  1. If your husband gets the child benefit for his children paid to him instead of you then you should get the new baby's CB paid to you as your 1st child.  I think the best thing to do would be to call the CB Centre & speak to them.

  2. Im not sure what its like in your country, out presume that its quite similar everywhere. I am from Australia, and all you need to do is call centerlink and they will then organize an appointment for you.  Here also, even if you are not with the father of the baby. or the mother, they take into account that you are with a partner and if that person does work, then that will affect how much you get

  3. You put your name down on the clain and say it's YOUR first child.

There is a part on the form that says 'does your partner have any children or claiming for any other children' just fill it in about the other kids and should be fine.

I'm in England.  I assume it's the same form etc

  4. To be honest i'm not really sure. I know that when i stayed with my dad and his partner, she had two kids who where not my dads and she claimed child benefit for them and my dad claimed for me. They where two different claims. They where not married though. Have you got a local advise shop you could call? I stay in Scotland UK x

  5. Your husband claims for the step-kids, and you claim for your kid as a first kid.
