Question:

Getting color out of cloth without damaging it?

I have an old patch from a shirt that I want to sew onto a hoodie that I want to customize. The trouble is, the hoodie is supposed to be in the colors of white, black, and sky blue. The patch is bright pink, neon green, and white. (It was originally on a tie-dye shirt.)

Is there any way to bleach the neon colors out and recolor the patch to fit the black, blue, and white scheme I'm planning without damaging the patch's material? I thought about bleach, but I've heard that eats away at cloth.

  1. I think you could bleach it.

Put the patch in a big bowl of hot water and add a little bleach at a time. The hot water will open the pores in the cloth, like our skin. So, it doesn't matter if the water cools down. As soon as it is the way you want, rinse it VERY well. Place the bowl in the sink to keep from spattering on anything!

Bleach can destroy material. But, I think only if it has sat in straight bleach for some time.
