  1. A lot depends on your service, but DSL is often as easy as plugging the DSL modem to your phone line and then to your computer or router. Some services do not require you to enter a user name and/or password.

At the very least, you should receive a package from your provider with the DSL modem (or a wireless gateway, or some other similar device). You should also receive some line filters to attach between the jack and your phone.

Again, depending on your provider, you may also need to do some configuration on your computer. Typically this would involve going to Network Connections and then editing the properties for your network connection (right click on the connection and select properties then "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)"). If your computer will connect directly to a router or gateway, rather than the modem, you may need to set the IP Address,  subnet mask, and default gateway (the gateway would be the address of your router or gateway).

Your provider may also give you a primary and secondary DNS server, but you're free to use one from another service if you have the addresses.

  2. A DSL modem (either shared or dedicated), a phone line capable of speeds between 256kbps to 2mbps (or more), and a connector to your computer's LAN card to get you the connection.

The tech support guys should give you the username / password and register the hardware address with their ISP office to get you up and going.

  3. Basically you connect the DSL modem to your phone line and your computer or router.  Then you follow the settings needed for your computer and set up your computer or router to use them.  Some DSL services use DHCP while others use PPPoE.   If in doubt contact your DSL provider.

  4. modem from isp and 2 network cables

    the isp log on info

    user name    and password

in xp you create an internet connection and specify type

    do not know about vista

its a good idea to use a router

it will log you on easier

you either use a setup disk for the router ( if new in box)

or do it manually in the web based interface

its called either a dsl connection in the setup or ppoe

you cannot just plug the router has to be setup

  6. you will have a modem that either attaches to your computer or if you have one, a router. the modem will connect to your computer using an Ethernet cable. they look like big phone jacks but they arent dont force them into a phone port. the modem connects to the internet via a phone line, the modem will have a port for a phone cable. plug it into the phone port thing on your wall. when you first use the modem, you will probably be asked for your username and password. you should then be able to connect to the internet using your new modem.

@@@most importantly follow the directions that come with the stuff@@

  7. it needs a modem, phone line, and a hub. it depends in the modem and the isp provider if they will ask for a username and password. . . but mostly only wireless dsl only needs passwords . . .
