Question:

Getting epoxy off of pipes?

So my husband (let's name him the 'handyman') decided to "fix" our leaky toilet until the repair man can come by using epoxy around the pipe joints. It didn't work. Not only is our toilet leaking, but I can't get the epoxy off and I'm afraid if i chisel it, I will bend the pipe. He used mighty putty epoxy. Does anyone have a good way to remove this without damaging the pipe? Thanks.

  1. Just put something to catch the water under the leak let the plumber worry about it.  Because you are right, you just might make things worse.

  2. Mighty putty is actually a "plastic" so you can melt it. Just be careful with the pipes. Another way to take it off is dry ice.

  3. If you're calling a plumber anyways, I'd let him worry about it.  But, if you really want to remove the epoxy, heat (tourch) will make it very brittle, then you can, scrap, sand etc.

FYI, "Mighty Putty" might stop a leak in a down spout (no preasure) it's not going to stop a leak in a preasurized supply line
