Question:

Getting from Kentucky to Mexico?

What's the cheapest way to get from Kentucky to Mexico (Monterrey - it's close to the Texas border)?

I have plenty of time on my hands and don't mind being on buses for a while.

I've had a look at flights but its a few hundred dollars.

Any tips on cheap flights or buses would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

  1. Probably for you the Bus is going to be the cheapest but also test your patience.   You might be able to book a last minute flight to Dallas or San Antonio but that means hunting and pecking on the computer + getting lucky.   A bus ticket will be a constant..

From either city mentioned you can book bus service directly to Monterrey, only about 120 miles from the US border.   I've never booked the bus ride from the states into Mexico but have bused around Mexico extensively and suspect that the service will be similar.   My experiences have always been good wth my bus trips although some of the 17 hour trips get a bit boring.   I think from San Antonio the bus ride with stops will be about 6 hours, nice road once your out of Laredo..

  2. I've done many trips my bus to Mexico. I suggest buying a cheap in advance bus ticket to Laredo, Texas. Usually the really cheap bus tickets cost the same to San Antonio as to Laredo so might as well get as close to the boarder as you can.

From Laredo, you can get a direct ticket to Monterrey(most expensive), you can walk across the boarder and get a taxi or public transport to the bus station(cheap), or you can buy a bus ticket from Laredo bus station to the Nuevo Laredo bus station(cheap). Once in Nuevo Laredo, you can get real cheap tickets to Monterrey or anywhere else in Mexico.

    Good Luck

  4. Bus travel in Mexico is wonderful and reasonable, especially if you take the Primo class. They have big comfortable seats that recline, movies, bathrooms and you get to see the scenery. You will need to take Greyhound to a border town such as Laredo and take the Mexican bus from there.
