Getting hold of national insurance numbers?

my mums coming up to pension age and will be applying for her state pension, however on the form she is being asked for her husbands national insurance number. he died 15 years ago now and we dont have anything of his containing that number in the house. is there anyway we can get hold of this? thanks

  1. Your father's NI number will almost certainly be kept on his medical records, under the fredom of information act, your mother is entitled to have them, so have her apply for them through her/his medical centre.

    It would also have been kept by his last employer and also his last tax office.


  2. There should be a helpline number on the form, phone and ask.

  3. Tax office won't have this if your Dad died 15 years ago. Records are only kept for 6 years, and then get wiped off computer. Employers aren't obliged to keep records that long, but you could always contact and ask.

    I think your best bet would be to contact National Insurance Office in Newcastle, quoting Dad's date of birth, date of death, and last address. Or attach that information to her pension application form.
