Question:

Getting hot in my house, having a central air problem

Our central air has quit working. Air blows but it's not cold. Filters have been checked/cleaned/replaced and we turned the system off, and then back on.

It's 90 degrees in our house and it's nighttime! Can anyone offer some suggestions?

  1. Hopefully the "replacing the filters thing is not something that was put off for too long before this latest effort...

There are a number of things that could be THE problem here... and the only one that could tend to finding the cause would be a qualified service tech...

Pray, that it's the system needing freon gas... and Pray that it isn't a compressor that has gone out (these are extremely expensive)

Keeping clean filters in the air flow vents is the best way... besides keeping the system gassed up properly, to keep the compressor from going bad !!

Depending on where you are... service charges can be from fairly reasonable ... to, well... not reasonable at all

Gassing a system is not that much expense, and the service call should be the heaviest end of THAT bill !!

Hope this helps in some way.....  ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚˜Â¼ /////

  2. There is a condenser unit with a fan outside your house. It is enclosed in aluminum fin enclosure. When your AC is on, is the condenser and the fan running. If not you will not get cool air. It could be as simple as tripped circuit breaker or as bad as defective compressor. I would call a professional HVAC technician if you are stumped.

  3. She's froze up.Turn cool off and run your fan ONLY for 40 minutes to clear the ice and then run it as normal and it will start cooling again.

  4. Check out permafrostonline.com.  I did this and adding this to my air conditioning system made the house cooler and my electric bill a little lower.  They only have to come one time and it's good for the life of the unit.  It worked so well I had it done to my car because it gets really hot in south Texas!  Worth the investment, which is not really that much. Good luck.

  5. In addition to the fans, I've found that eating some cold food before bed helps. You can also try taking a shower before bed.  Your hair might be wet, but you can always put a towel over the pillow.

    God bless!

  6. Make sure you don't run the air conditioning when it does this because it can ruin the compressor and make the problem worse.  Call someone to fix it as soon as you can.  Close of hot rooms and shut all shades and curtains to block out the sun.  If it seems to be helping open windows, if you have an upstairs, both upstairs and downstairs so that the hot air that moves upstairs may be pushed out.  At least downstairs you will be cooler.  Fans can be set at windows to blow in downstairs and out upstairs to help with this.  Keep as cool as you can and have a lot of icy drinks available to help from being overheated.  If you have bedrooms not on the lower story, sleep downstairs if you have to!

  7. Break out the fans.  When I was little we I don't ever remember having air conditioning, by choice (I'm 22 now).  We used to soak sheets in water and wring them out really well and sleep under those.  I feel your pain, it was 109 here today in Nebraska.

  8. this is a ghetto idea, but if you have a fan one of the big rectangle ones, and you can alter cool air by puting the fan in your window, on the opposite side, and cool air will come into the house.

  9. Sounds like your condenser (the unit outside the house) has quit working.    This could be because it froze over due to trying to cool the house from a very hot temperature all the way to the desired temp in one long blast.  It could also be because the condenser's time has come.  You can check the breaker and reset it, but it will probably blow again.  If no breaker has blown, you may be out of freon.  Finally, your freon valves may be broken or frozen.  Either way, it's time to call the A/C man.  When the A/C quits blowing cold air, it's almost always something a do-it-yourselfer can't fix.  Good luck and I hope the repair fee is reasonable!
