Individualized education plan, i have had sooo much stress lately with my family and im going to this rehab type thing with the hospital and will be on a 2 week medical leave of absence in school. The problem is im a senior and i might not graduate because my english teacher isn't helping me at all. he thinks having emotional problems doesn't mean anything. I really think if i get in the IEP it will help me pass. How do i do this without coming across as lazy?? im truly not,i used to be in model u.n. and made good grades, im just severely depressed, i mutilate myself, and i have drugs and alcohol problem. i dont know what to do. but i need to graduate. my mom doesn't want me to because she thinks im going to be around weirdos, so how do i do this myself?

  1. You don'rt necessarily need an IEP-

you may need a 504 plan-

a 504 plan is for any student with a temporary or permanant dsiabling condition including emotionally illness

a 504 plan can give you many accommodations such as extended time-the only thing you cannot get is a special education class (resource room/in class support teacher)

ask you principal who the 504 coordinator is.

is it possible to switch to another english class with a different teacher.

if you feel you need a resource room period to get extar help than you will need an iep--

but it can take 3 montsh to get it in place-it will be past graduation by the tiem anything is done

    the 504 should be quicker...

  2. If you were diagnosed as ED(emotional disturbance) you may be able to qualify for special education.  Typical depression would not qualify you for special education, but I do not know your story and there might be more that would help you qualify.  My suggestion would be to get your GED and rest before attempting a higher degree.  If you were in Model UN and made good grades in the past you probably will be able to study and pass the GRE exam.  Good luck!

  3. Speak to your school guidance counselor now!!!

You need to deal with your drug and alcohol problems first...this is by far more important than graduating on time.

What will you do if you graduate AND you are on drugs and drinking?  Your diploma is worth nothing if you are self-medicating.

Even though you are legally an adult, what is your mother doing to help you?  Why aren't you in counseling or rehab???

  4. Get the people at the rehab place to talk to the school. If you are eligible for special ed they would need to be involved as your medical care providers.

Another thing if you are 18 it has nothing to do with your mother unless for some reason she is still your guardian. If you are considered as an adult you can do what you like.

If you're still concerned about what your mom thinks then why don't you arrange for you and her to visit the special ed class. or find out if anyone you know is in special ed and use them as an example of how unweird they are.
