Question:

Getting into an Ivy League school...?

I am home schooled and in the 9th grade (I'm 14). I recently decided to start taking my studying more seriously because I would like to try to get into an Ivy League school. I am wondering what all of you would recommend doing in order to have a shot at accomplishing this goal.

Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Kay

  1. Being home schooled puts you at a bit of a disadvantage. Schools (particularly Ivy's) put less weight on grades for home schooled students. The best option would be to attend a high school. This would allow you to establish a class rank which would put more weight on your grades.

I realize that this may be a sticky issue. However, do not lose heart as there are other options if you are unable to attend a high school. Firstly, achieving a high SAT score would really help. It's been almost 20 years since I took the SAT but when I took it you needed at least a 1400 (out of 1600) to be competitive. You should also take as many AP exams and SAT II exams as possible and receive high scores (95% or greater). This means taking as many advanced subjects as possible. I also recommend taking courses at a local college during summers (or even online courses) if you are able.

You also need to do something to make you stand out. Join as many extracurriculars as you can without letting your grades drop. You also need to show leadership in these activities as well. For instance, raise money for a local charity or lead a reading to the elderly campaign--volunteer in your local community.

While it is good to plan--and I commend you for doing so--do not stress yourself out. Work as hard as you can, but also try to stay as relaxed as possible. If you balance your ambitions while also enjoying your time as a teenager then I believe things will work out for you.

Best of luck and my best wishes that you achieve this aspiration.
