  1. For now the GT is good the way it is, maybe after a few months of recognizing what you want from the sport should you consider upgrading. If you upgrading, you should start with the pedals, maybe seat, and perhaps grips. In terms of protection, I would think that the traditional helmet shall do fine, but don't go for a cheap one. Other things you should get would gloves for comfort, water bottle and cage for hydration.

  2. Fun, isn't it? My first ride, too many years ago, was on a Vermont B&B tour.

I'd suggest several trips to a lot of bike shops. Talk, question & test ride. Personally, I like Specialized, Trek is good...Kona, Diamondback, GT, Cannondale...man, it's like candy!

    Check all the websites.

And, try a mag subscription to Dirtrag, or Mountainbike, etc. In a year they'll cover all the techniques & trix thatll come in handy & go over new bikes 'n stuff.

Definitely a helmet. Ride aint' good if you dont fall off a few times & if you ever hit your head on a rock w/out a helmet...i did...it's not fun. Use gloves & glasses-tree branches have a way of finding your eyes.

Get the basics first so your covered. Itll give you a chance to see what you want/need. You can upgrade later.
