I want to get into better cardiovascular shape by running and was wondering:

If i am not in shape at ALL right now, do i start off by doing 1 mile/day and build up, or do i start off with long runs and have them get easier gradually?

  1. It is more realistic to start off slow and build up over whatever time you need.

Try an Elliptical machine first.  I started with barely staying on for 5 minutes to staying on for 50 minutes about 9 months later.  It is not as hard as real running, but it is a lot easier on the knees.

You will probably need to sign up for a gym membership to get an elliptical.  But, you also get good advice from the staff there and you can also use other exercise equipment.

  2. Start off with somewhat easier runs and build yourself up once you get the hang of running you will need to start going on longer runs to challenge yourself,,,, anyway good luck!
