Im 16 years old, 6ft tall and weigh about 200 pounds. Ive never surfed before but really want to. I was wondering what are some good ways to get into shape for surfing, i'm a pretty good swimmer I just need to know what muscles I should work. Also do those INDO boards work?

  1. yea i agree with everyone...work those muscles that u use when doin push-ups, and especially the shoulders for paddling. work your neck a little if u can too, mine sometimes cramps up cuz im lyin prone for too long. pretty much the most tiring part is paddling...h**l, ive paddled through some heavy currents, and once at the line-up, i barely had enough strength to pop-up.haha. just lose some weight mate...itll make things easier and more fun for u out there in the water.

  2. Work your upper body and go for the V shape. You'll spend more time paddling than doing anything else.

I think Sam George uses or advocates the use of the Indo board.

  3. You dont have to try to get muscles, just make them stronger because when you're going to be surfing, you can get caught in heavy currents and when you paddle your way out to catch a wave, you're gonna need a lot of strength, so just work on making your muscles stronger and make sure they're tighten real good, you're gonna need a lot of energy when surfing.

-work on your balance, core strentgh, swimming, paddling, confidence.

and i would focus on losing a bit of weight.

  4. Shruggs help me get ready for the spring season.....stand up with your arms at your side... hold dumbels (i use 25 lbs) andtry to bring your shoulders to your ears with your arms staying straight....this works the muscles used for paddling... works best for me and im about your size.

  5. Short answer, balance and core strength.  So that means strengthening your abdominals, lower back, hips etc.  Also, think about the muscles you use when standing up on the board.  Do push-ups, squats, and Romanian dead-lifts.    Any activity that approximates surfing will help you - skateboarding, snowboarding, balance boards, wakeboarding etc.  Finally, if you are a good swimmer, you should be fine, so just getting there on your board is your best bet.  I get more tired from paddling out than anything else.
