  1. the mom licks their *area* so they will go potty and she takes care of that until they;re 4-5 weeks old and then she, SHE, teaches them to use the litter box.

  2. Use a warm, wet cloth.  Use "l*****g" motions or small circles and apply gentle but firm pressure to the base of the tail.  Be persistent.  Don't just rub a few times and give up.  If that doesn't work after a full minute or two, switch to rubbing the business area directly.  Make sure your cloth stays nice and wet and don't be shy about using pressure.

Especially if you have JUST taken them in within the last 24 hours, their little systems may be a little confused with their new parent!  It took my kitten nearly 18 hours after I first took him in to get him to eliminate.  So, be a little patient.  If a whole day or longer passes with no movements, though, you should be prepared for an emergency vet run.

Tip:  You have a unique opportunity to litter train them in a way that's impossible with mom cat still around.  Go ahead and get a disposable foil baking pan (they have shorter sides and are easier for kittens to use as a starter litter box).  Fill it with litter.  As you help them eliminate each time, put each kitten's little feet in the litter so they can feel it and associate it with elimination of waste.  You can even gently move its paws through the litter to dig and bury before and after you clean them.  I did this for my little 3-week-old, and by the time he was able to eliminate on his own, the litter box was old hat to him.  Never an accident at all.  Now, 16 months later, he has the most immaculate, tidy litter box habits I've ever seen in a cat!

  3. well if you mean in a litter tray they often copy their mum!
