Getting married... 2 rings or 3???

Question

Ok... my fiance says the woman gets three rings when ur getting married. An engagement ring, a wedding ring and a band.

I say its only 2 rings; an engagement ring and a wedding band... i thought the wedding ring and band was the same ring - just called by either name.

I have a promise ring from before we got engaged but he says that doesnt count as a wedding ring...

So what is it?

Is there really 2 rings or 3?

If theres 3 then whats the 3rd ring for...

The wedding ring and the band are the same thing, it is two rings.

You're right. Traditionally women in the Western world receive two rings (unless they choose an alternative to the engagement ring): an engagement ring, and a wedding band (same thing as a wedding ring). In other countries they have three rings to symbolize the different stages of a woman's life.

Techincally on your wedding day you only get one ring, your wedding band.  You should already have your engagment ring so that's two rings.  But if I were you I'd tell him he is only a tiny bit confused, that the 3rd ring he is referring to is an anniversary band that you receive on your first anniversary!

but hey i was wondering.. what finger do u put ur promise ring on when ur enganged?? cuz i have my promise ring and idunno what finger to wear it on or what to do ya know??

You are right.  It is two rings.  An engagement ring and a wedding ring or band depending on the style.  Three might not look bad but is certainly not necessary.

However, it is also common to receive an anniversary ring on a wedding anniversary. My husband and I have only been married for three months, but on our three month anniversary, he gave me an anniversary band (it has three diamonds in it signaling our three month anniversary). I wear it with my engagement ring and my wedding ring. My grandmother also has an anniversary band. It has five diamonds on it, and she got it for her fiftieth wedding anniversary, for five decades of being together. That is the only time I have ever heard of three rings in a bridal set.
