when should we get our engagment pictures done?

we've already booked the photographer, just trying to figure out when to schedule the session.

Whenever is convenient for you. Really, there is no certain time when you need to get them.

As soon as you get engaged or as close to it as you can.

They are "engagement pictures", not "halway to the wedding pictures".

We got engaged Dec 25, 2007 and had our pics taken the first weekend of February (it took me a couple weeks to find a good photographer and get an appointment).

As soon as you can. As you are probably aware there are a million and one things to do for a wedding.. so just start crossing things off as soon as you can. Also if you get them done sooner you may use them for things like invites or thank you notes for engagement presents. Good luck and enjoy planning : )
