  1. Okay, I hope this helps and congrats on your engagement!  BAH will be paid on his LES and it will be based on the area you live in, so will be enough for a decent home.  Or you could live on base and either not have to pay anything or have to pay only a little (some bases are going to privatized housing.)  Housing on base varies from base to base.  They are trying to make base housing nicer, so some bases are better than others.  And sometimes there is a long waiting list for base housing and sometimes there isn't.

If you live on base it's nice because everything you need is right there.  It does feel like people are more in you business on base, but you'll always have someone there for you when you need it too.  It's really what you make of it.  Once you have kids it's nice because there are always kids your kids age to play with.

The Army and Air Force go pretty much everywhere in the world so you have a lot options to travel.  I enjoy traveling so I like it.

  2. Go to military.com and a lot of your questions will be answered there.  Most of what you'll get here are opinions and personal experiences, which are great, but you really need facts straight from them.

I loved my experience with the military.  I actually miss it, but it was hard getting used to civilian life after I got out.

  3. You should take AFTB classes when you get to the duty station. It will help you learn all of the acronyms and terms and how it all works.

  4. well most base housing sucks unless its brand new....most bases are going to privatization so its almost the same as living off base and paying rent..and you have more freedom off base...you need to look at the base housing where ever he is stationed and see if its something you want to live in...the outside of course unless you know people that live on base....bah will be different at different places and his rank can also cause it to increase....

  5. okay ready, when you go to look for a house at whatever base your at see what the BAH is, it is a different amount depending on state.

After that go and see how much houses rent or sell for (rent if your there for an unknown or small period of time, buy if for more than 5 years)

If you live on base they take all of your BAH and apply it to your rent and utilities, but if you do research you'll find out really quick that a place can be found off base that you can rent or buy and still have money left over after utilites.

For example we get 800 for BAH where we are at and we pay 665 for our house payment, we pay our utilities and still have some change, not much, but when we move away we can sell out house and we keep that money.

Just make sure you consider travel time and gas expenses when you find a place. we live 5 minutes from base so he still gets to come home for lunch when he can. Good luck, any more questions feel free to email me. I've only been married to my soldier for a little over 3 years so I'm still learning :-) but ill help with what I know
