Question:

Getting married while going to college

I just got engaged last month and I'm extremely happy, but some of the realities have caught up. I will be getting married in about a year but I will be a full-time student and working part-time. I already know that this wedding will be affordible (it's not all about the "superficial," the act of starting my life with someone else is what's important). However, I would like to look drop dead gorgeous and make sure my family have a fun day. How do I make this work?

  1. start planning now and push it back if possible.  Trust me you need as much time as possible if you want it to be affordable and still look great, especially while going to school.  It is going to be stressful.  Try to plan it during a break from school.

I planned my wedding during school with a short amount of time and as affordable as possible and I definitely could have cut the cost if I would have started planning earlier.  It also would have been nice if I would have planned it so I wouldn't be so busy during finals.  I had invitations, exams, papers, and final projects due on top of fittings and all of the other wedding things.  It was so stressful and a lot of things went wrong.  You will need a lot of people to help you.  Just tell your family, friends, bridesmaids and fiance that you need their help.

EDIT- We hired a photographer that my Mil knew (you can also check with colleges)

Professional Videographer-was a member of the church did it for a wedding gift.

Sound guy--member of the church did it for our wedding present.

Decorations-do a poll of people you know, you may be able to use some of the same decorations and then add your own to it.  (what do people do with their decorations when they are done-we borrowed white lights, tulle, arches, pillars, round mirrors, hurricane lamps, the list goes on and on.

People from the church also helped us decorate.

The church was free and so was the minister (my Father in law)--we did donate to the church.

I bought my dress off the rack and hired an individual to do the alterations.

Have a cake and punch reception if possible-don't serve alcohol it is expensive.

If you have any other questions just ask me or send me a message.

  2. Same problem here,  whish I knew what to do...we only want to spend 7,000 (neither of our families canhelp) and so far we're at 9,000 in the wedding plannng ideas.  WE nEED TO CUT BACK cause we have no  room for any minor glitz & glamor....like I wanted steel pans f and a small sand sculpture for the beach ceremony.  Can't afford it!!

  3. I would say keep the details simple.  The more bling you add, the more caught up in details you become and it's really difficult to be involved with college and planning at the same time.  Also, by reducing the number of vendors involved, you have less people do deal with.  My suggestion is to spend some time at an upscale cosmetics counter and learn how to apply makeup the way you want it.  Same thing with a hair salon if you want an updo (some will happily teach you, others are very resistant).

In my case, I am reducing the need for hairstyle issues by having a particular type of headpiece and veil that goes with my pseudo-tudor gown.

  4. I will be in school (finishing up) and working part time when I too marry next year. I will be nearly 21. I know that settling into a shared life, and new arrangement won't be easy with so much on my proverbial plate, but I also know it will be worth it. My mister is my best friend and my love, and I look forward to being his wife. In fact, this is one time I am glad time moves so quickly...Heh, I sometimes wish for this one year it would go a little faster. My fiance' and I are planning an offbeat, elegant, and beautiful English Garden wedding for $5,000. I don't really understand your question...Are you wondering how to juggle everything, how to have fun and look gorgeous without breaking the bank, or how to have a inexpensive but memorable wedding? I have a list of budget tricks if the question is budget-related. I'll update my answer, if you update your question =]
