Question:

Getting molars removed to allow wisdom teeth room to come through?

I noticed that when i had a molar taken out of my lower jaw (due to decay) it allowed the wisdom tooth behind it to come through on that side. All of my older siblings have had to have their wisdom teeth taken out - meaning a general anaesthetic and subsequent swelling etc. So i thought i could just get the molar on the other side taken out to allow that wisdom tooth to come through. Would this work or would it be problematic for some other reason that i haven't considered?

  1. Since they haven't come in, sounds like you're in your late teens.  This is when most people choose to have their wisdom teeth taken out.  And it is very advisable to do so because wisdom teeth may crack your molars if they grow in the wrong way.  Also if you're worried about your nice smile, get them out soon.  Wisdom teeth may cause crowding of the teeth which may lead to crooked teeth.  As you get older, your teeth get denser which means they'll be harder to take out.  So get them out ASAP if they're bothering you.

  2. Well, I'm no dentist.

But I would ask a dentist.

Sorry thats not very helpful but thats what I would do.

  3. I agree w/Emily Dew. I had my molars out because they were crowding my molars, but she's right in what she said

  4. That may or may not work, depending on how the wisdom tooth is aligned.  If there isn't any problem with the existing tooth, it would be much better to just have the wisdom tooth removed.

If you do have extensive decay on the one you talked about removing, it may be better to remove that one, but removing it doesn't guarantee the wisdom tooth will come in straight, or come in at all (it may be coming in sideways).

Also, molars are pretty large teeth, so it is also possible that the wisdom tooth could come in, but won't be flush next to the tooth in front.  If that happens, you would likely need to have ortho to try and pull the wisdom tooth into place, but that can't always be done either (due to the distance it may need to be pulled).

Basically there is a lot more to consider rather than just pulling one out and hoping the other one takes it's place.

  5. You really should ask a dentist, but my dentist said that wisdom teeth generally cause more trouble than they're worth in most people.  That's why a lot of people have them removed.  Mine came in fine, but they were so far back that I had problems brushing them and developed several cavities in them.  My dentist advised me just to have them out and I did.  I think you need the molars more than you do the wisdom teeth, but you really should get a dentist's opinion first.

  6. It is not healthy to get molars extracted to make room for wisdom teeth. Because if the wisdom teeth come in place of molars then wisdom teeth will not be in proper postion with the upper teeth and ultimately it will cause problem. The molars in front of wisdom teeth are more important as they play an important role in chewing of food. I am giving you the following link where you can have knowlege about wisdom teeth
