Question:

Getting my 10 year old to read?

my daughter has summer reading to do and for some reason I just cannot for the life of me get her to read.

I have sat her down, told her to read, but she will just sit there staring at the same page for hours.

I don't get it.

  1. Why don't you read with her, make it a bonding experience? Sometimes kids need some kind of push from their parents. Depending on the book size and number, read to her every night and let her give you back a brief summer of what was read to her. I have a six year old brother, whom i do this with. He now likes to read and is still learning and going on to more complicated words. My parents are too busy to spend time with us, so we help each other out.

  2. is her eyes OK? her vision could have decreased over the summer making it hard for her.do you criticize her when a mistake is made in reading?this often will make them nervous.have a comfortable setting for her to prop up to read.

  3. Have you considered dyslexia?  This would make it hard for her to read and even  harder for her to enjoy reading.

Test her by having her write out a few sentences or a paragraph, then look it over.

Aim for something with the B's and P's and d's throughout/

If this is indeed the case, then you have a starting point.

  4. Sitting her down telling her to read isn't going to get her to read.  Forcing her is only going to get her to dislike reading altogether.  Let HER choose the times she wants to read.  Let her see YOU reading, impress upon her how enjoyable reading is.

  5. How are her grades in school? CAN she read?

Do the teachers say she has problems?

Lots of times, kids dont' read not because they don't want to , but becuase they CAN"T.

This could be a learning problem, get it checked out.

  6. ok well kids never ever like to read so get her a book that is acually interesting to her so that she will acually want to read it. when i was a kid i would never read anything ecxept a book that was interesting or sounded good to me.GOOD LUCK!!

  7. Maybe you should try to read with her or check on her once in awhile. The problem could be she doesn't like the book.

  8. Ask her the type of stories that she likes to hear. Read with her and then when you find out her likes and dislikes, concentrate on the likes. Good Luck

  9. Read with her. Ask her questions about the book. Have her read to you.  Is she picking her own books or is it required reading? If she can, let her pick her own books to read. See if she's got a problem understanding/focusing on what she's reading.

  10. Read a few pages of an interesting story to her, to pique her interest.  If possible, stop at a cliffhanger.  Then hopefully she will become motivated to continue reading to find out what happens next!
