Question:

Getting my braces off finally.....?

Today I thought I was suppose to get my braces off but the orthodontist told me he had other plans. I figured they are my teeth so I should be able to do what I want. I constantly told the office I wanted my braces off before I went back to college. I was expecting to get them off today but they wouldn't take them off!!! I told him to take them off and he got mad!!! So he took impressions of my teeth and said it would take a month before I got my retainer. I found this quite odd because all my friends got their retainer that same day or less than a week.

So I want to know is this odd or does it sometimes take a month to get your retainer?

I am very upset and looking for some way to possibly get them off, any advice?

And also, since I am over the age of 18, if I tell them to take my braces off, don't they have to?

  1. It doesn't work like that. He's not keeping them on there because he wants to. Your teeth may need a little more time to set. Your teeth can grow back to their original position. Just listen to what he says. It takes about a month to make the retainers. Your friends probably took the molds before. If you want to consider yourself and adult, then act like one. Follow your dr's advice & don't throw a tantrum when he gives it to you.

  2. Whaoo! this is sooooo cool, and i have your answer. I got my braces off tooooooooday too. After an hour or two of cleaning and pulling, my braces were off and cleaned. my orthro took my impression and he told me about 2-3 weeks. It really depends if you're getting the metal-kind retainer, or the clear one (which takes about an hour). I'm getting the metal one, so it's going to take a while. I'm smiling so much now, and i love my teeth. I think you did the right thing, my mom also wanted my braces off too and so did my orthro. It is your choice and it is your teeth that he's dealing with. They have to take it off, if you tell them, all they can do is tell you that you should wait a few more months, you have control.

  3. I have braces that it is normal, most dentist do it and reccomend it to make sure everything is in ok. I get mine off in a month too.

  4. I had braces a few years back and they did take a while to give me my retainer.

I'm not sure how the removing of braces before the "expected" time is. They probably don't want to do it until they have the retainer because your teeth start reverting to the old position as soon as they remove the braces, so it is essential that you have the retainer when they take it off.

  5. It takes about 3 weeks from the time you get impressions taken to get your retainer. The only reason why he refuses to take them off now is because your retainer won't fit when you get them.
