  1. Usually older cats are at risk from anesthesia..it is not typical that a vet will do blood work for a young cat first unless the cat is known to have a problem with anesthesia.  Spaying is a pretty routine surgery and rarely are there problems or complications.  Talk to your vet about risks, and care after wards.

  2. well im no vet but I know that you can request them to test if your cat is allergic to the anesthetic and make sure you do what the vet says,I would also recommend a Elizabethan collar at least for a few days.....

  3. your vet will do a CBC (complete blood count) which is just basically a blood paneling to make sure there are no pre-existing conditions or infections. There is a higher risk because she is in heat, I'm sure you're aware, but I assure you that vets have tons of experience spaying older cats.

a catheter will also be placed in your kitty so if anything goes wrong while she is under they can quickly get to her vain to give her medications.

i am not a vet but a vet technician and current pre-veterinary university student. i hope this helps. don't worry... everything will be fine!

P.S. YES, the vet will do blood work if your cat has been in heat no matter how young it is(unless he really just doesn't care about your animal). the risk for complications is much much higher because the cat gets a crazy high level of extra hormones when in heat. If you are really that worried you can just ask for a blood panel to be done but I am sure they will suggest it anyway.

  4. My best advice is to just take her and get it over with. Your cat will not think it is perfect. If you have friends or family with cats who were spayed or neutered, ask them where they went to have it done. When you take your cat to the vet, express your concerns. Usually the local animal hospital would be ideal. He or she will give you the peace of mind you need.
