I am planning on getting about a 60 lb. or 70 lb. heavy bag. Yet, should I get vinyl or canvas? Also, does it make that much of a difference if I use hand wraps instead of gloves?

  1. i use to box,get a canvas bag, definetly use handwraps, and bag glove, you work the bag for punhing technique and arm endurance to increase handspeed u need a speedbag.the most common at home injury from training is a broke wrist from hitting a heavy bag.when u punch with just gloves rather with wraps and gloves u will see the difference.

  2. First off, well done on making the decision to get a heavy bag.  you're on the road to fitness.

Now, if you're planning on getting a good heavybag, best to maybe take a peak inside a boxing gym.  You'll see that almost all of the bags in there are made from vinyl (however my hb at home is made from canvas)  I've found that vinyl bags are more expensive, but last a lot longer.  If you're first starting out, get the lighter one, because you may not have the proper punching technique yet and will only hurt your wrists if you hit the heavier bag incorrectly.

Now for the other part of your question, you should always wrap your hands properly adn wear bag gloves 10-16Oz (or up to450grams) gloves for heavy bag training.  this is to protect your hands as wraps will never be enough to protect your hands alone.  the only bag you can hit wearing only wraps is the speedball.  If you learn how to wrap your hands properly, you should never get cut knuckles or chafing (tip: try to buy elasticated wraps, they let give your hands room to expand when you punch, plus they are far more comfortable.)  Happy boxing..

  3. Just work that out yourself.  If you go all out, you'll probably want both gloves and wraps.  If you go medium powered to work stamina, I've found that the wraps are fine.  So get the gloves and wraps to start, and when you wear out the gloves, you'll know whether or not you need a new pair.

I haven't used all the gloves, but the ones I did, I couldn't use without the wraps as it would chafe the c**p out of my skin.
