Question:

Getting my older cat to like my kitten?

Thank to all of you who answered my question yesterday! I rescued an abandoned kitten the other day and she is healthy and o0n th road to a normal weight and healthy life. However, whenever she is around my full grown cat (Lily), Lily hisses and scratches and growls. Then the little one gets all hissy and puffy too and I can't move them without losing blood. I don't want either one to get hurt or feel less important than the other. What do I do?

  1. Introduce them for short periods of time. Keep the kitten in a separate room and let them sniff each other through the door. It will take time for them to get used to each other. Cats are very territorial, so of course your older cat feels that the kitten is invading it's space.

Here is an article you can read that might help you..

  2. We went through this last summer when we brought a new kitten home.  Our 2 girls now get along really well and will play together but not cuddle together.

It's going to take the cats some time to get used to each other.  You should try and keep the kitten in a separate room and introduce them for short times several times a day.  Make sure that Lily is getting plenty of attention and that she isn't feeling left out.  They may never "like" each other......but with time and patience they should learn to tolerate each other.

Again, give them both equal attention, but maybe don't let Lily see you giving kitty attention for a few days.

Be prepared for some fights and spats, just ensure that there is no serious injury......cat fights LOOK far, far worse than they really are!  Lily needs to show the new kitty that this is her territory and that she's boss.....and kitty needs to show Lily that she won't take any c**p!

It'll all work out in the end.......good luck!

  3. Normally you let cats work out things themselves. they are complicated animals most of the time and don't like help. They are stubborn a lot. Have you noticed that when you try to get them to move outta your chair? Let them see you is on the top and if fur starts flying (i mean that literally!) then you separate them, it can get fatal. Our cats still hate each other but they learn to live with it... most of the time. They fight when over the chair sometimes. Or just fight cause they hate each other. Just let them be. Animals like figuring things out on their own.

  4. well i had the same problem with my cats all you do is let them see eachother like you have but when one of them hiss then take him/her to another room shut the door let them be for a lil and then trie it again till they stop

  5. It's never a bad idea to gradually introduce a new cat to the house.  Lily just probably feels threatened by the new addition.  You should keep the kitten in a spare bedroom or bathroom for awhile maybe a few days or a few weweks depending on how quickly Lily warms up to her.  They can get used to one another's scent under the door or bring in one of lily's toys to the new kitten and maybe a towel that the baby sleeps on can be brought out to Lily.  You can allow them to see one another for a little bit each day but then put the baby back in the room so that Lily can relax and maybe not feel so threatened.  They will eventually get used to one another and hopefully become the best of friends!  Sometimes it helps to use a product called Feliway asa well.  It is a pheromone spray that helps to reduce anxiety in these types of situations.  It comes in a spray bottle or you can buy plug-ins.  US e the plug-ins in the rooms where the cats spend the majority of their time and use the spray when you are allowing them to mingle.  Hope this helps....Good Luck and don't give up!!
