Question:

Getting my private pilot's license?

About a year ago, I took an intro ride in a plane and absolutely loved it, but the only problem was that I didn't have the money to get a PPL. So now I just got a job and I am making around 80 dollars a week. Would it be best to wait until i got all of the money (which is 5,800 estimated at the flight school), so I can do more lessons per week, or start now and do a lesson every other week. If I wait it will take a year and a half until i could start, but if I do it now, I wont be able to do many lessons in a week. I am really stuck right now and could use some help.

  1. Wait till you get all the money and take the course all at once and quickly.

The slower you go, the more lessons you will have to repeat.  I used to take 3 lessons per week and I was advancing real fast because I moved quickly without repeating to show I didn't forget what I learned.

    Good Luck...

  2. DEFINITELY wait until you have all the money.  It will be much more beneficial for you, because you won't run the risk of running out of money, falling behind, and wasting money having to repeat lessons.  Plus, knowing you have the money will relieve a lot of stress.

  3. Do the training all at once. You will forget a lot if you wait between flights that much.

  4. have you considered learning to fly ultralight planes or getting your sport pilot first?  the lessons are sometimes less expensive than the private pilot lessons.  I don't know where you are located at but here is a site in Northern CA that provides instruction http://www.freedomfield.com

  5. You should start now.  Look at how long it has taken since you were first interested.

I am a student pilot myself, and I found that, the longer you wait, the more will come up that you will want to use the money for.

Also, with fuel prices going up, so will the cost of lessons (plane rental).

I also suggest taking lessons from a flying club. Either way, most of the flying schools add the amount of lessons they want you to take, anyway, so you are better off going ahead and getting what you can whenever you can.

Here is a site that can help you get started, including funding help: http://www.aopa.org/info/certified/funds...

  6. Complete ground school while you're saving money.  Once you pass ground school, keep studying and start taking lessons.

  7. What they said. Wait until you have all the money.

I wanted to give you two other tips though:

    1) Get books on flying. Especially get the FAA books you will need anyway, the Airplane Flying Handbook, and the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. You can download them, but you will want printed copies eventually. Start reading them and learning.

    2) If you can afford it, take a lesson every once in a while. Don't expect to learn a lot or get better, but you will develop a relationship with an instructor and it will make you happy.
