Getting nails done .. question about different types! ?

whats the difference between gel nails or acrylic or french acrylic or any other different types . please explain thoroughly so i know what i what when i go get them done tomorrow ! which is also the best for my nails and wont leave horrible marks on them for weeks. thanks so much ! :)
