Question:

Getting old laminate tiles off hardwood floors?

Today I want to pull up a nasty carpet from one of the bedrooms in the house. It will be our last house project. The reason I have put it off is because it has old laminate tiles underneath some of it. I would say they are from the 1970s, if not from the 60s. My husband is at work and I don't want him to come home to a huge mess I made! Is there an easy (or just not sooo difficult way) to get this laminate up? And what should I expect underneath? I assume mass amounts of glue stuck to the pretty hardwood. Thanks for any help!!

  1. Heavy duty floor scraper or a shovel with a square tip. A small hand scraper will take longer but work. Then there will be glue under. Some will chime in about the possibility of asbestos in the glue or tiles. It could be possible and can be tested for. Asbestos is not an issue unless airborne and inhaled. At least wear a dust mask.

  2. I agree with the answer above with a floor scrapper the job should get done faster but you may want to get it checked for asbestos if it is I would get someone else to do it
