Question:

Getting on a plane in the midst of a name change?

I've asked something similar, but now it's down to the wire. I got married July 19, received my marriage certificate August 14, applied to change my name with Social Security on August 15 (have not yet received my new card), and have an appointment to change my name at the DMV on Sept. 22. I fly from LAX to Orlando on Sept. 11 and return Sept. 19.

We booked our flight in my married name because we're using my new credit card with my new name. However, my license still has my maiden name. Should I carry with me a copy of my marriage certificate (or does it have to be a certified copy or original?) Should I also bring a copy of the confirmation of name change I received from SSA? Or what is necessary? Thanks.

  1. Contact the Airport in Advance ask  them what you will need don't delay it and wait you will regret it when they treat you like Osama lol

  2. Since you are travelling domestically, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.  Bring as much documentation as you can (but not the SSA forms, having that copy of your SSN around is too risky.  Allow some extra time to deal with any issues that may arise.

Caveat - the airlines are being very fee aggressive.  It's possible they will insist on you paying a change fee to change the name on the ticket.  Try for a supervisor if you can, but you might get stuck.  Technically, they are within their rights to do so.
