Getting out of a contract? HELP!!!!!

I'm in a tight situation.

I was a member of Bally Total Fitness then realized I wouldn't be able to afford it because I'm a college student(they advertised a different price from my contract). I never paid because I never went to the gym. Well, the people from Bally's would call me everyday but I never answered. Then the calls eventually stopped. Then I received a letter in the mail from this debt collector telling me that I have to write them a letter stating why I shouldn't pay off this debt or I would have to pay it.

What should I do?

Should I make up a fake injury or say that I don't live near to a Bally's (like the woman who works at Bally's told me I should do if I wanted to get out of the contract)

  If, in fact, the price charged was not as advertised, and you can prove it, see an attorney.  The contract may be void.

I would probably tell them that you don't live near it if that is what the woman suggested.
