Question:

Getting out of a red light violation?

I just got a ticket in the mail with pictures of (my car) running a red light in Chicago... The 'driver image' on the site is unavailable but the car clearly blew a red light on video.

Are there any reasons you could legally run a red light such as "Gang activity and what sounded like gunshots warranted it?"

I really don't want to pay this $100 ticket, I feel as though I've been robbed.

  1. Since you have already said that you are not paying the ticket and you will continue to run red lights, the only thing I can say is ... go ahead, but watch your point total.  I'm guessing that your license will be suspended soon.

The fine will not go away on it's own, you will not beat the ticket.  Failure to pay a fine for violations of the vehicle and traffic code is enough to get your license suspended in some states.  I'll go ahead and guess that you will drive without a valid license after yours gets suspended ... more fines and fees to ignore!

  2. They have heard and hear every excuse imaginable. Please don't get your hopes up.

Complete stops at a stop sign and red light and red lights in general are an inconvenience but part of driving.

You'll have another moving violation in the next 90 days anyway,so why does it even matter?

Or are you just a pulling my leg?

  3. The only people who can run red lights are emergency vehicles (police, ems, firetrucks) when they have lights and sirens running.

There is no legal reason you could offer for running the red light.

Had you hit someone - you would have been responsible for their damage and injuries.   Is it really worth the risk to lose your house, your savings, everything you have ever worked for or will ever have just so you can run a red light?  Because, if you hurt or kill someone and your insurance policy limits are not enough to pay them - they can and will sue you. Once your policy limits run out -- you can be held personally responsible for the damage and injuries you cause.

So, consider yourself luck that you did not hit anyone when you ran that light.

You were not robbed. Someone (either you or someone you loaned your car to) ran a red light. If it was you - pay the ticket and stop running red lights. If it was someone you let borrow your car - pay the ticket and then get the person to pay you back.

  4. Lol...dude, you got caught...just pay the ticket =).
