Question:

Getting out stains on hardwood floors? how to?

I recently bought a house and have pulled up all the carpet. nice hardwood underneath, but needs a little work. i WAS TOLD THE WOOD IS FIR WOOD. (if that helps anyone)

The floor was stained in some spots very badly, I am assuming from the pervious owners dogs. There is one spot that is quite big that is a way lighter color then the floor is originally. it's tan and the floor is a dark deep brown. can this be caused by pet urine? Will sanding take this out? Not sure what my next move should be on this.

The house is very old, and I beileve it would be a very hard task to replace the boards? but this may be my only option.

Any reccomendations?

  1. THE FLOOR NEEDS TO BE SANDED(usually can get a sanding machine from Homedepot). Than needs to be stained and varnished(maybe with a darker color.)

  2. I would recommend calling a professional hardwood floor refinishing company. Properly refinishing hardwood is not a diy job. And you have the board replacement and matching to deal with.

The light stain doesn't sound like it will present a problem when the floor is sanded. The dark stains from the urine will require aggressive sanding and probably (board) replacement if you want to get rid of them altogether.^

  3. Have someone sand the floor down they will reapply a coat of stain and varnish to it .
