I am a 46 yr old female. I ran a bit in my 20's and 30's(recreational not competitive ) but have layed off for awhile. I would like to get back into running and run a half marathon. How do I get ready?

Notice that there are categories for Novice intermediate and advanced runners.

You will notice that even the novice level program assumes that you can run 3 miles.

If your fitness level is below that, I would recommend that you start out by jogging a minute, then walking a minute. Repeat until you are tired. Every few days, try to add another jogging segment to your workout.  As you progress, work on extending the jogging time. You can extend the walking time, but I would try to keep the walking time to half of what you are running or less.

  3. It sounds like you have a good runners background.  I think you need to plan when you want to run a half marathon.  I think maybe anywhere from 3 to 6 months from now.  It all depends how much running you can get in.  Another factor depends on how far you can run.  You can add a weekly long run say around 10-20% more than your longers run.  This should be attempted after about three weeks of steady running.  Your goal should be to finish a half marathon so if this means walking most of it do it.  After you can plan to go for a personal best time.  When in doubt go to the library and find a few books and educate your mind before you run.

    Good Luck

  4. Start by slow working youreslf up to 6 to 8 miles a day. I don't know what your conditioning is now but start at a slow pace and work yourself into it. Then increase your speed if that is what your working for. Don't over do it, especially in the beginning to reduce to possibilities of injury which will severly hamper your goals and desire to run that mini m.

    Good luck
