  1. Try boarding the large windows and tape the small ones. We did that when Hurricane Rita hit.

  2. you cant put duct tape across the the inside of windows at least if they break all the glass doesnt fly in everywhere..

    You need battries

ice in case fridge goes out so you can put food from fridge into coolers

    Medicine if you take any

anything for your kids if you have those diapers, baby food etc)

I also always get the gas in the grill filled up to cook out you may be weeks without electric.

get canned goods soup/tuna/beans veggies etc.

  3. board them up.

if you dont ahve much money, use anything you can get, seran rap would work, if you put a bunch of layers. Also card board from boxes? if its that bad, take the windows out. good luck. :] also, stay at the hotel for a night. relax until the hurricane has passed. unfortunatley, there isnt much you can do.

  4. Since you said you can't afford to board up your windows, may I suggest a cheaper alternative.

Go to the hardware store and buy as many nylon tarps as you can afford, plus nails and a hammer, if you don't have one. Cut out a piece of a tarp that's slightly larger than the window you need to cover, maybe 3 inches on each side.

Nail the piece of tarp to the window frame. Do this so that it's tight like a drum pad. You will NOT need to cover all of your windows! The winds of a hurricane blow counter-clockwise. So concentrate on the windows that face the Gulf of Mexico and those that face east.

About the car, when I rode out Hurricane Floyd in Fayetteville, NC. I parked my car so that the hotel would shield it from the strongest winds. If you live in a house, I would park it around back, snug to the house, but, away from any trees. If this is not possible, park it "into the wind". Most modern cars are aerodynamic and can survive winds upto 100 mph. If you're worried about flooding, see if you can park it in a parking garage, and take a taxi back.

Finally, don't panic. If your husband is deployed, are there friends or other "army wives" you can stay with? Contact the USO and see if they can point you in the right direction.
