Getting rid of F-duct and double diffusers was a good thing: Jenson Button
McLaren’s Jenson Button recently gave an interview online and stated that the FIA made the right decision by getting rid of the F-duct and double diffusers.
Jenson finished in 5th place in the 2010 Formula 1 season and lost sight of the title after the 2nd last race of the season, where he was unable to score sufficient amount of points in order to keep him alive in the championship run.
However, Jenson is pretty confident about the 2011 Formula 1 season and he believes that the team with the most well balanced car is going to win.
He believes that the reintroduction of KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) is going to make Formula 1 more interesting but he is not so sure whether reintroducing a movable rear wing was the right decision or not.
KERS is a device which converts heat energy generated by the car, mainly due to braking, and converts it into Kinetic energy for later use in order to give the car a sort of a “power boost”.
“KERS is great… As for the moveable rear wing I don't know. For me there was already a lot of overtaking in 2011. When you make a manoeuvre and it's difficult it can be a real buzz,” said Jenson.
Other than that, he talked about the team’s simulator and revealed that it has a 3D screen with a tub from a Formula 1 car which moves while you’re driving in order to create the feel of a real Formula 1 car.
The driver, though, clarified how the G-force in the simulator is not the same as felt in a real F1 car, since for re-producing the G-force in the simulator, weights are attached to the helmet. Although, the effect is not exactly the same, it does help re-create
an almost similar track-like feeling, which helps the driver gauge the car's performance better.
“It's not maximum G-force though since it's attached to our helmet [weights attached to the helmet replicate the sensation of G-force]. If you pulled five Gs in this thing it would rip off your head. But you feel the bumps, you feel the shift. We do all
of our set up on it before a circuit,” he said.
Nevertheless, using KERS is going to be great according to Jenson as a it is already being used in road cars, and if used in a Formula 1 car, one can imagine the amount of power a V8 engine would be capable of providing.
