Question:

Getting rid of Moths?

I have a huge infestation of moths. I think they may be pantry moths/Indian meal moths. The majority are in and around my parakeets cage but also spread out over my entire apartment. I clean out the cage often. How can I get rid of them safely? I do not wish to harm my bird or any of my cats.

  1. they come from the bird seed, put your seed in the freezer

to prevent the larvae from hatching

  2. If you can buy Moth Balls in you country(I live in the U.K.) try them! these can be purchased in most pharmacy's.

They are a small white ball made of a chemical compound that moths don't like and it will kill them, put them anywhere you have an infestation you just need to cover them with a plastic cup or similar  with small holes so the smell seeps out

The smell will not harm your birds..

  3. usually they hang out in seed based products. Freeze what seed you have or discard and start fresh. They can get into any food source that is grain based too so they may be coming from somewhere other than infested seed. The only thing i know of to do is to thoroughly clean and seek out the  offending ready to hatch chrysalis of these pests that maybe lodged in cracks of your pantry/food area, bird cage, stand table it sits on etc... or even in packaging of your other foods. Stopping their cycle manually is the only * green* recourse. Spraying pesticides will only cause issues to your pets.

Also check your seed source at the place of purchase of the food you get for the bird. They may be the supplier of your problems.

They are a pain.... good luck.
