Question:

Getting rid of a tray ceiling

I absolutely hate it! my house is a few years old and i think it is the worse thing. But we don't know what could be in that soffit, which makes us think twice about removing it. It is on the second floor, with an unfinished attic above. Would they have run ac vents and stuff through it? Thanks

  1. A tray ceiling is typically built for visual effects and not for hiding something. You will probably find soffit Framing, blown-in insulation and some electrical work for lighting fixtures inside it. Heating and air conditioning ducts are usually in walls and run under the house or in the basement. Sometimes they are in the attic. But never hidden in a tray ceiling. What you will have to do is go into the attic and take a look. Take a flashlight when you go. If you find nothing behind the ceiling then your okay for the next step. Please keep in mind that tearing out a ceiling is a messy job. Wait until cooler weather comes to do it.

  2. they would have put AC ducts through it, and its a selling feature, I would not remove it, you can always add paint to make it look better.

  3. I wanted a tray ceiling and didn't get it in my dining room.  This is a very desirable trait in a house - it makes the ceiling look higher.  Don't get rid of it.
