Question:

Getting rid of bed bugs?

I never had bed bugs before and I never knew bed bugs were even real. "Don't let the bed bugs bite" I thought it was just a saying but about a month or two ago I started noticing these little flat bugs. I didn't get any used furniture or anything. I don't know where they came from, all I know is I wanna get rid of them.

Someone told me to try washing my sheets once a week and while I do that spray my matress and stuff with lysol. I just started doing it but I don't know if it's working. I'm wondering If there's any other non-professional way to get rid of them?

  1. If you’ve positively identified your problem as a bed bug infestation, it is time to sanitize the affected areas. If you can spare money for another mattress it would be a good idea to throw your old one out. If you can’t afford another mattress, vacuuming the mattress and applying a sealable cover should be sufficient. Meanwhile, all clothes, linens, and bedding should be washed in hot water, and the immediate area vacuumed thoroughly...

  2. I have read that many hotels are having bedbug problems due to international travel and the fact that some pesticides that kill bedbugs are now illegal.  Maybe that may unravel part of the mystery of where you got it.

I have read that Neem oil is effective. It is made from the bark and leaves of the Neem tree, which is native to India.  Use 1 tsp per quart of water or 4 tsp per gallon.  A google search should bring up a number of places to buy it.

  3. I think you should call an exterminator.  I once read that bed bugs stay in the floor boards until it's dark.  I'm not sure whether or not they actually live in your mattress, but if they don't, getting a new mattress won't help.

  4. I heard the other day that those little gel packs that come in snacks and things to keep fresh (you know...the ones that say 'keep away from children', 'do not eat', those can dry out the little suckers.  I am guessing you would have to open them up and put the pellets under your sheets on your mattress.  It's worth a shot...and cheaper than getting a new mattress!

  5. I have ffriedns that swear by Kleen-Free Enzymes that they get at www.kleen-free.com but it is onlya contact killer so it will only kill what it is sprayed on.

I would use it in conjunction with a PCO but if you do not want to bring in an exterminator then it will take you a gallon or two and some vigilant spraying of the Kleen-free to do it and quite a while as you will need to spray everywhere around the room and keep going until you hit them all and they hide well.

    Good luck.
