Getting started on dyeing?

Question

I want to start tie and low immersion dyeing. I know where I want to buy my dyes from, but am unsure of what to get to start out with. Any tips and/or ideas would be great.

'DharmaTradingCo' is a good place to get to know - it sells a wide variety of supplies with good instructions on how to use them. Best of all, they have a 'project' section that takes you through how to do different things and details on the supplies you need for each. but be safe with it too!! you need an apron that the dyes will not penetrate, rubber gloves, dye pots, spoons, strainers, etc that are NOT for food preparation. These should be kept in a cabinet where they will not be mistaken for cookware by anyone.

I also suggest that you have some sort of floor covering to protect your kitchen or utility floor. Oil cloth works nicely for this.

I have 6 gallon jars for making natural dyes and storing them til ready to use, 3 dye pots, the old enameled canning pots work very nicely, a handful of wooden and stainless steel spoons, and a strainer to pour stuff through so it doesn't clog drains. Also very necessary, cooking thermometer that hangs on the side of the pot!!

Also nice to do is check with your local Environmental Department to see what is legal to dump into the drain system and what isn't and how to dispose of that which isn't.

This is one of the leading companies for fiber dyes. Very high quality dyes, knowledgeable staff etc. Many of the dyes sold in speciality stores are from this company. FYI they do have weekend workshops. I have always wanted to do one , but they book up really fast.

Do not let the variety of dyes confuse you , their staff will answer just about any question. There is a tremendous amount of information on the site for just about every kind of dyeing, and every kind of fiber even synthetics.
