  1. Don't buy it yet.  The new edition is coming out in six weeks.  Wait and purchase it, and just use your friends books in the meantime.

As far as learning how to play goes, the ONLY way to get a handle on D&D is to play.  It's weird like that.  Hopefully your friends know what's going on and are patient enough to help you out.  They should be.  You'll have a blast.

  2. As a previous poster said, don't buy the books now!  Either your group will upgrade their game to 4e, and you'll want those books instead, or they'll stick with 3/3.5e, which will be a lot cheaper after the 4e books come out.

  4. D&D is a imagination game.

you only need to use your imagination.

Characters are created to follow the regime of the

    area or world your exploring.

    Stats are for your abilities.

Equipment and treasure are for you to know how much

your capabilities are while you are adventuring in the realm

    of that world your exploring.

  5. are you playing the board game or online?  If anything just share the books till you know you like it. the DM should help you if its your first time. you will get ahold of it.

  6. I wouldn't worry about learning it before you even play it, you can google up on it sure but the game is huge, even your friends will have their heads burried in the compendiums trying to figure out modifiers during battles. You will learn to play it as you go, that's how I did. Just be open minded, most of it is role playing ie. acting (pretending to be someone else) picture the character you wanna be ie. strong/devious/helpful and just dive in. (Your friends will tell you which dice to roll)

  7. One of the best places to learn a lot of general stuff about D&D is through the D20SRD (www.d20srd.org). It will give you a rundown of all of the basics of the game; classes, stats, feats, spells, etc.

Remember, D&D isn't meant to be a game on rails, where you have to follow a specific set of rules. You have to operate inside the game mechanics, but other than that you're free to do whatever you want.

I recommend that, if this is your very first time playing, create a fighter; it's probably the least complicated class out there, especially starting out.

  8. You can access the System Reference Document , the simple online ruleset at http://www.d20srd.org

The official Character Sheets is at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd...

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I regularly hold DnD games

  9. Go to the link below at the D&D website hosted by Wizards of the Coast and read the simple info of "What is D&D?"  Once you are done, at the bottom, you will find a "demo" which allows you to experience a very basic game of D&D.  Fantastic for the first timer.
