im a decent bit into college, and ive been a lifelong golf fan. hit some clubs long time ago on a driving range but nothing major. recently ive taken a real interest in learning to play golf myself. ive no clubs and i dont think id be able to invest a grand in getting fitted for and buying some clubs at this point (also im like 6'5 and hit lefty). so where should i begin? theres a few golf courses around town, a mediocre one like 3 miles down the road with a driving range and very cheap green fees, but i doubt i should be doing that yet. dont know anything bout lessons being around here, though im going to take a semester in beginning golf at my college next semester, possibly an intermediate golf afterward.

  1. Awesome. Well, go to the local golf shop and explain to them what you want to do. Buy USED CLUBS but make sure they fit you correctly, given your height and handedness. Try and take a lesson during summer so your golf class in the fall will be a lot easier. Keep your head down and swing easy. You sound like a big guy so you don't need to swing very hard. And watch the tournaments on TV, paying attention to the leftys like yourself: Mikelson, Weir, Flesch, Axley. I've learned A TON by watching the Pros.

  2. first off you got to decide what kind of clubs you want to play with. i would say go to  the pawn shops and get you a cheat pair. and start from that will guide you to more or less at what kind of clubs to get. and beside that you want be investing a whole lot of money . i started with a beginner set and after the first hole i said to my instructor i need a full set and i took off from there.

  3. Here is a golf guide ebook, it sells very well online, and I have got one too, I love this book very much, there are a lot good tip for you to practice, and now I have improved my golf ability . So I think you can try this book too, go here to see more detail and buy.

  4. I think you should buy a full set of golf clubs that are cheap but still work and get a lesson or two just to see if you like playing the actual game of not. The game is extremely frustrating and is not for everyone. If you start to really take interest in the game, that is when you begin to invest in the sport. Also, I believe that you start with chipping and move on up to a full swing. Try out a par 3 course where the distances are a lot shorter so you do not feel embarrassed when you play.

  5. DUDE , i was in the same position as you 5 yrs ago .......WHEN i got my tax returns I decided to go to walmart and by a cheap set .......it was 170$ for EVERYTHING , except balls ...........GO GET ONE THERE ~!

I now am a 10 handicap and have a two thousand dollar set ~!

  6. You should look around for a set of used clubs but still a decent make.  Cheapo off-brand clubs are hard to hit well.  Best bet is to look at a local golf shop (not the pro shop on a course) or on eBay or Craigslist.org.  Buy a set of 7-10yr old clubs such as some older TaylorMade Burner irons, or Ping or Callaway.  Those are good brands that offer great clubs even in their older lines.

As far as your driver and fairway woods, do the same... go for some older TaylorMade Firesole or Burner, or Callaway Big Bertha.  Those are older clubs now that you can get for cheap but will still perform very well.  (In fact I know some great golfers that still use those models).

You can probably find a full iron set, 3 iron - Pitching Wedge, for around $150. Get 'iron shafts' and 'regular flex'.

Your Driver will probably cost you $40-$50 (get 'graphite shaft' and 'regular flex' with '10* or 10.5* loft') and same goes for each fairway wood you want to get (3 wood and 5 wood).

As for a putter, just find a style that you like, blade style or mallet style; light or heavy.  Odyssey has some great older putters that are inexpensive and peform very well. Get a 35" or longer.

Balls: get a 15-pack of Top-Flite XL Distance balls, you should be able to get 'em for around $10 a box.  You'll lose more balls than you think in the beginning so cheap is good and Top-Flite is great quality for the lower end.

Bag: Target or Wal-Mart have great bags for about $40.00, can't beat that.  You want a 'stand bag' that has legs so it stands up on its own when you put it down.  You'll also prefer 'dual straps' so you can save your shoulder by wearing it like a back-pack.

eBay is gonna be your key here.  You can find custom stuff sometimes like 1/2" extra long clubs etc.  You'll also find individual items you can buy separate like fairway woods and/or hybrid clubs.

Below I linked some stuff for you to check out so you're headed in the right direction.  You can get fully decked out with everything you need for probably around $350 or less.  After that just hit the driving range, don't worry about playing golf the first few weeks, just practice at the range.  Good luck!
