Question:

Getting started with cloth diapers?

I'm going to try cloth diapers. I'm planning on buying a few different kinds to see which work best. I'm wondering what kind of accessories I'll need. Does anyone have ideas? Also, what are your favorite diapers/accessories? Thnx!

  1. If you'll be using prefolds or flats you'll need either pins or a Snappi, plus covers. Fitteds need covers, too.   If you'll be using pockets you might want extra inserts for overnight or car rides when baby will be peeing more.  Some moms like a diaper sprayer to help rinse the p**p off into the toilet, but others just dunk.  I have a hand-held shower head that reaches the toilet, so I just use that.  If you use a diaper that needs a cover, don't use the Gerber covers.  They're awful.  Fleece is nice and soft and I love wool.  Some people like liners.  I honestly only have one. :-)  I only use it if my little guy needs rash cream on rare occasions.  (Like if he eats too many prunes and his butt hole turns red and raw, poor boy.)

I use FuzziBunz, bumGenius one size, Kissaluvs, Green Acre Design (GADs) fleece pockets, and a few other ones.

These sites are great if you haven't already found them.

  2. Sorry, cant help you here. I feel cloth diapers are a waste of money, and also unsanitary. But, I can tell you cloth diapers make excellant burp rags.

  3. I use Happy Heinies one size cloth pocket diapers and love them! They are really soft inside and come in an awsome array of colours. They are so easy to use and care for and definately not unsanitory...!

As for accessories, there's not really much you need, but I'm a big fan of my washable diaper pail liner, it just gets washed along with the diapers.

  4. We use cloth diapers for my son full time, and you couldn't pay me to go back to paper ones.  They are not at all unsanitary if you have a washing machine, and they have lots of benefits. :)

The easiest to use, and the closest to disposables, are pocket diapers.  There are lots of brands, but we love bumGenius pockets.  They are one-size, so they'll fit your child from about 10-35 lbs.  They are about $18 each new, but you can find them used (there is NOTHING wrong with buying used cloth diapers, lots of people do, including us)

The cheapest way to go would be prefolds and covers.  Prefolds are about $20-$30/dozen if you get good ones from Green Mountain Diapers or Little Lions (the Gerber ones at Walmart are not good).

I have included a link to a great cloth diapering community, where you can get all your questions answered by experienced cloth users.

  5. I use the terry squares made from bamboo, you can fold them into so many different nappy shapes, they are great. You will need a waterproof wrap (about 10 of), if you are using the squares you will need either nappy pins or a 'nappy nippa' (they are amazing!), a nappy bucket, some nappy liners and bum cream.

    good luck =)

  6. since you don't specify, are they for you or your kid?

  7. We use cloth diapers, and LOVE them! I use mainly prefolds and PUL covers. A lot of people really like pocket diapers though too. We started with the prefold and covers because it was the cheapest, and since we like them, that's what we use. One hint is to make sure you pay attention to the sizing. I bought prefolds that were way too big on my little guy at first. Only accessories that I would say you need is a wetbag to throw the dirty diapers in (then the bag and all gets dumped into the washer). For my dirty diapers when we're out I just throw them in a grocery bag, some people buy a small wet bag though. Using prefolds I also really like using a snappi, although some people just put the diaper into the cover and snap the cover on.  My favorite covers are the Thirsties. Two good sites to go to for cloth diapering questions are www.diaperswappers.com and the cloth diaper message board at www.babycenter.com.
