  1. Raise the blades, most people cut short and let the sunlite in to germinate weed seeds, sharpen blades when the blades of grass looked ripped not cut, invest in an edger that cuts the grass from creeping onto the sidewalks and into flower beds. Fertilize Spring and Fall. De-bug when bugs start eating your grass and making it brown, assuming its not lack of rain or fungus from too much rain.

  2. Depending on the age of the blades, and the number of hard things they've hit, they can probably be just sharpened.  Any one with a bench grinder and a few files can do this for you.  Sharp blades cut the grass more uniformly, and cut the blades instead of tearing them, so you don't get brown grass tips.

Also, cut your grass in different directional patterns.  Don't just drive in circles.  Pick a line down the lawn -- aim at a tree or anything, and cut a straight path across the lawn.  Then keep following that line, alternating direction, so that each pass is cut in the opposite direction.  Do the outer edge last.  This really makes a big difference, and takes essentially no more time.  The next time you cut, pick a different angle, perhaps at 90 degrees to the past cut, which you should still be able to see.  Alternating the direction keeps the grass from getting "used to" one direction, and tends to grow more upright.

Check any major league baseball field -- they're always pattern-mowed.
