Question:

Getting the day off?

I want next Friday off from work, and I'm not sure how to go about this. I have already used up my (meager) vacation time for the year.

It seems like EVERYONE else in my office is constantly taking days off. There are weeks where practically no one is here, except me. I NEVER take the day off. I guess it's work ethic, whatever you want to call it.

The thing is that these other people are always making up lame-a$$ excuses as to why they can't be here, etc. I don't want to do that. I don't want to lie. I just want the day off for no particular reason.

My question is this: give them a week's notice that I'd like the day off and make up some lame excuse, or call in sick the day of? I never call in sick (once in 2 years). They will want some reason if I give notice - and I don't really have a viable one.

  1. I think you should be honest, why do you really want the day off? If you are honest, the request will go smoothly, you don't have to lie, no made up story, and chances are, you will get the day off. Analyze the situation: who is working on Friday, who is not, that way, you will have a rebound to come back and respond with manners.

Think of it this way, you have to trap the boss into not giving you the day off, that's where you come with the rebound.

    Good luck.

  2. Just be sick.  No one will die.

  3. Tell them it's personal

  4. How much is meager?  Most places allow at least 2 weeks of vacation and 1 week of personal days.  Thats 15 days you would have already used up... BY JULY.

If that is the case, you should probably just call off.

If you work for Genghis the day manager and you get less than that, you should seek other employment.

  5. call in sick and say i have been sick over in the night and i have been to the doctors and thay seaid i need a week of

  6. Talk to your manager and work out a personal day. Say up front that, "I don't want to go into details, but I'd really like to take a personal day next Friday. I realize I may not have vacation so I'd like to see what we can work out."

If you are a good employee, your boss may just say, No Problem! Enjoy the day!  Or may suggest that you put in a couple of extra hours another day in over-time. I would NOT mention how everyone else seems to get so much more time off - even if it's true since it sounds petty.

Your manager will appreciate you talking to her.

  7. Give them notice and a reason why.(Can you say it's personal??) Calling off is never a good idea. Its worse than scheduling a day off. You will appear more professional by telling them in advance.

  8. just tell them you have an appointment to go to on Friday

  9. Every employer is different and their rules are different. I have 3 weeks of vacation per year, and if I use all my vacation and sick days, I can't have off period. I must come to work. However, some companies will allow people to call in and take a day off without pay. If that is your company's policy, just tell them you need that day off for personal reasons. You don't have to disclose those reasons. It could be a plummer coming to your home, or a court date, whatever, it isn't any of their business. Hope you get the day off and enjoy it!
