The spectators not only enjoy the cracking action of volleyball but also love these adorable characters, which put a lot of smiles on many faces. The volleyball enthusiasts, especially the young kids, scream and dance as the two mascots show up in the competition
hall.
Fuji television Network Incorporation is believed to create the famous Vabo Chan some three decades ago. It was one of the first event characters ever designed in any sport. Vabo Chan was created with the sole purpose of cheering up the audience. It was
first introduced at the 1977 FIVB Volleyball World Cup match in Japan. It was a new trend, which raised many eye brows and grabbed a lot of attention.
The credit goes to Mr Tajima, a Japanese celebrity illustrator, who designed the character. He had to sacrifice his sleep for many nights during the creation of Vabo Chan as he described afterwards. However, his hard work did not go to waste and brought
him under the spotlight with the success of Vabo Chan.
The production manager at Fuji TV, Mihoko Sato, also shared her views in this regard. She said, “Vabo Chan is a very important mascot for us as a TV-company. The kids love him. He is immediately identified by them as a Volleyball character that means big
competitions like World Championships, Grand Prix or this FIVB Men´s World Olympic Qualification Tournament. Since 1977 we have updated him a little bit to take him in to the future of Volleyball. Now he comes in five different colours, and pink is the most
popular.”
Following the success of Vabo Chan, another volleyball character came into being. It was none other than Volley-Boo, which rapidly turned out to be huge success. The two volleyball characters made a combined appearance at the 1998 World Championships in
Tokyo for the first time. Volley-Boo was launched by TBS, which was a right holding television company at the tournament.
Speaking of the Volley-Boo, the TV director for TBS Naoki Hashimoro said that they saw a great potential in the character and cooked up the idea to use it for the promotion of sport. Furthermore, he also revealed that Vabo Chan found a great friend in the
form of Volley-Boo.
Now both these mascots are quite popular among players and fans. Everyone wants to take pictures with them. Vabo Chan, which was initially introduced in only one colour, has variety of colours now. Pink Vabo Chan is regarded as the most popular and all the
world-class volleyball teams have their pictures with the adorable Pinky. Likewise, Volley-Boo is equally likes and admired.
