Question:

Getting to the bottom of a 13 foot pool using a feet first surface dive?

I am taking a lifeguard class and we have to go down to the bottom of the pool which is 13 feet. The instructors have had us using a feet first surface dive. I get nearly to the bottom, but I am struggling to reach the bottom completly. I can normally reach the bottom with no problem if I just go down head first, but the type of dive that they are having us use seems to be really hard for me. I get within about two feet of the bottom, and then I start to float to the surface. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  1. I would suggest crossing your legs, feet together, and crossing your arms over your chest. I used it while in the Navy to pass a third class swimmers test. Good luck!

  2. In my guarding class they wanted you to do the feet first surface dive but once you got like half way down they didn't care if you turned around or not

  3. Keeping your feet together, your arms down by the side,  and jump in hard. You should go down easily, 'free-fall' for at least 8-10feet. Then when you are almost stopped, use your hands and chop downwards, and quickly turn palms-up and push the water upwards. When the palms reach almost to eye-level, turn them and edge-wise chop to belly level and repeat the movements. You should be able to reach any depth with this technique. Best of luck!!!
