i just started dance today, literally. i've got a few years before i need to be really really good to train to go into the musical theater field. how long does it usually take until you can go up on pointe from regular ballet? i know part of it is experience, and part is building up muscle in your ankles and such. how long does it usually take? is there anything i can do to get to that point sooner?

  1. The time it takes to get from beginning ballet to pointe will depend on several things...

    1. how often you take class - at least 3x a week, with 4 or 5 classes a week you'll make faster progress

    2. how strong and/or stable your body already is -- though you will be learning to use your muscles a different way than you do playing sports

    3. how well you apply yourself to learning correct technique and placement (posture); you have to be your own "policeman"

Generally, I'd expect at least two years of "serious" training before you're ready for pointe.

  2. Probably at least three years, it took me five years with two classes a week to be able to go onto pointe.

  3. well pointe requires a lot of strength and that's hard to find even in dancers who've done it for years.

ankle strength is a big thing. you could get onto pointe in a few years time and it may sound long but the effort is worth it.

perhaps 3 or 4 years to be confident in starting to dance properly on pointe?

if you can buy a strip of thin rubber [most dance shops have them - they're called 'thermobands' and they cost like $3]

then that'd be great. there are some really simple and easy exercises you can do with them which help your ankles heaps!

    good luck!

  4. Well, to be honest, it's up to you. The harder you work, the sooner you will be on pointe. I wanted it more than anything and I worked amazingly hard, and I started pointe 6 months after first starting ballet. I do not recommend that, though. I could do it but it was harder for me than it was for everyone else. I hurt my ankles some, too. I was older when I started ballet so I felt pushed for time and wanted to start pointe as soon as possible. I probably started a bit too soon...but oh well, I am getting better now. :) Some of the best ballet dancers started pointe too soon and had a rough start.

You should take as many classes as you can, and work hard outside of class trying to build up your muscles and ankle strength. Your teacher will know when you're ready. Pace yourself and don't rush, but work as hard as you can. I wish you all the luck! As a fellow dancer, I know the pressures in ballet when you're trying to get on pointe and if you really want it then you can do it. Strength and confidance, my friend.

  5. at my studio, it took me three years before i could actually do point. if you want, go out and by the shoes and just walk around the house in them and practice like crazy!!!

  6. You could go on pointe when a good, qualified teacher says you are ready. Even then, in some cases it could be too early and with some people, they should never be put on pointe. Beware as you can do yourself harm. You can enjoy the feeling of dance without going on pointe. It can actually be quite painful, you know.

  7. 3 years atleast at my ballet school age dosen't matter but you have to be atleast 10 do ankle circles every day plus LOTS of releves with a deep plie then full extension try ballancing on pique passe for 15 sec. and that should get your ankles strong and... WELCOME TO THE BALLET THEATRE!!!!! welcome to the world of ballet i know you'll like it hope i helped :D

  8. it really depends on your body. i'd say, maybe 3 years.. just talk to your dance instructor before you go on pointe because only he or she will know when you are truly ready.

good luck and hope this helps!!!

  9. three years
