Getting you nails done?

How many of you have got acrylic nails put on for your engagement/wedding?

A lot of my friends said that they started getting their nails done shortly after becoming engaged or did it for their wedding. Now mind you, I'm not going to do something just because everybody else does, but I've been seriously thinking about getting a full set because I hate my nails. I have a really bad habit of biting my nails that I just don't think I will ever kick (I've tried everything). I used to have my nails done on and off for years, so I know everything that comes with getting them done, like damaged nails and such. Then one day, my hairdresser scared me into getting them taken off by telling me about people she knows who's hands nearly fell off from infections they got from nail salons.

Today I found a nail salon that uses disposable equipment, and they use new tools for each customer. I'm was so excited, and then I started having second thoughts. Fake nails look so fake, but (cont.)

  1. I personally love the way my gel nails look. I never have to worry about how my nails look when I'm going out or have an event. I think they're very low upkeep (going for a fill once a month is very easy and almost relaxing). I would definitely recommend going to a more high class place that uses disinfected or disposable tools. If it is reputable they should allow you to go and look at the place as well where they keep their tools etc before you have anything done. I know it happens, but I think infections that bad from fake nails are rare.

  2. dont go to the asian solons that use harmful tools!  Call local spas and fin a nail tech that you can  talk to about more natural applications.

I get my nails files down a bit on top, not drilled down.  So when the fakes come off its not damaged or weak.

Get them shorter and they will look more real.

do then 6 weeks before. fill every 2 weeks so that you can do then a few days before the wedding for a fresh look and polish.

if you dont like them after get them taken off.  Do not do that yourself

  3. Why not just get a regular manicure by a professional without getting fake ones? Have them use strengthener and I bet if you keep it up every 2 weeks, your nails will look nice

  4. My mom does nails ! I only get fake nails on occasions like my birthday & school dances [semi formal ones]. Getting fakes nails will help you not bite them, Cause as you know it hurts when you try to bite them off ! But don't always have nails on. Maybe sometimes just get them then get polish. =]

  5. I am like you, I bite my nails and they always look horrible.  I got french tips put on the, and had them cut them pretty short, so they weren't too long.  I am glad that I did mine cause I think it looked good in the pictures,  plus covered up my nail biting.  I haven't been messing with my nails much now.  I got them re-tipped a few weeks ago and didn't like the job they did.  So I am kinda second guessing whether I want them done again.  But for my wedding it was a special treat and thought it made me look like a princess.

  6. I'd go ahead and get them done. For one thing, it will make you stop biting them! I used to bit mine as well until I got the acrylic ones. For another, they do make your overall appearance look more finished, and if you don't like the look of your nails you'll probably feel more confident.

As for the salon, ask around, get some remediation's and don't worry about it.

  7. I've never had an infection from getting my nails done. The nail salons have always told me that I need to keep my nails clean and push my cuticles back to prevent infections. I'm getting mine done for my wedding and honeymoon, but they will most likely be my real nails just shaped and painted. Grow your nails and then take them to the salon to have the shaped and painted. They can work wonders on anyone's nails and they look real because they ARE real!

  8. I have natural nails and don't really like the look of the fake nails.  However, I think a manicure makes anyone's nails look fantastic!  Most likely they can offer a few suggestions to keep you from bitting your nails or perhaps just the thought of wasting the manicure will keep you from doing further damage!

    Best wishes!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Don't do it. As a 20-year-long nailbiter I can tell you that you will be far more prone to infection than someone who does NOT bite their nails. Plus, your nails are already weaker, thinner and less healthy, which will only increase if you get arcrylics. I found that getting engaged stopped my nail biting almost immediately because a diamond ring looks much better on a hand without the nails bitten off! It was very hard to stop, I'd tried everything (polishes, bitter polishes, manicures, rubber bands, sleep tapes, rewards, etc) and nothing worked except good old will power. You can also see a therapist, sometimes nailbiting is linked to psychosis (I went, it was pretty useless for me because mine is linked to boredom but if it is a psychosis it can be helped!).

Anyways, I would avoid arcrylics if I were you. Definitely not worth it. I tried them thinking ti would stop the biting and I ended up chewing through the arcrylic and damaging my nail and finger surface and then I had to have them removed and it was incredibly painful. NOT WORTH IT!!!

But it might work for you.

Good luck with whatever you decide!!!

  10. My mother does nails & when I was younger I'd spend hours at her shop watching in 'aw' as she designs & place 'fake' nails on. Thus, I've became very familiarized w/this whole topic.

Depending on different salons, you can ask for Chinese Silk Wrap ( clear fake nails over, glue on chinese silk & files it down for a natural feel & look ), or a clear nail glued over, filed down just a tad & add color or whatever you want. You can even cut it short for even more natural approach.

This is how I'm going to kick my nail chewing days away: I'm going to get acrylic done for months just until my nails grow pass the tips of my fingers & take the acrylic off & then apply the powder stuff on so it will not my my nail super weak and fragile this way .. it really is natural :)

    Hoped I helped!

  11. No way. I wore acrylics some back in high school and would never do it again.

I have been taking multivitamins for years and my nails are super strong. I d had my own natural nails professionally filed & painted a couple of days before my wedding. I agree with you that fakes look fake, and it's not the look I wanted to have.

  12. get your nails done keep it short so it would look natural your man would like it too. or just jet it done for the wedding

  13. Go ahead and get it done!  Go to the place that uses disposable equipment!  If they don't look good, then you can get them taken off after a little while or not get them redone.  Also, you don't need to get acrylic nails, you can try a silk wrap that lays over your natural nails and strengthens them.  If they're done properly, they're transparent and look completely natural aside from being a little thicker than natural nails.

I also hate the way my nails look, but sadly I'm too active to get fake nails.  The wraps worked much better for me, but eventually drove me nuts so they came off.  I hope you have better luck and are more patient than me!

  14. Yes, you can get infections.  You need to make sure the salon you choose is clean.  The nail tech should be washing their hands in front you.  It is also good if they ask you to wash your hands first.  Or use some type of sanitizer before they begin.  l highly suggest finding someone that does not use electric nail files.  The vibrations from the file over time can cause your natural nail to peel off of your nail bed.  Now they may use them if they are buffing the artificial nail.  Don't let them use them on your natural nail!

Another tip to prevent infection...when cleaning (home, etc.) use gloves.  The chemicals in cleaners can get in between the artificial nail and your natural nail and be trapped.

If you decide to continue wearing artificial nails for long periods of time (9mos. or more) it is highly recommended to take a month off or two from having artificial nails. Basically, you need to let your nails go natural so they do not get damaged from the filing and chemicals.  Sortof like letting your natural nail breath.

One big key, if your artificial nails start to peel up do not pry at them.  Do not attempt to pick the artificial nail off.  Yes it can be painful and it destroys your natural nail.
