  2. Come face to face with Melbourne's haunted past on an informative, fun-filled 2 hour historical walking tour conducted by Haunted Australia TV presenter, Drew Sinton. Spooky fun! Tour starts 8.30 pm Saturdays at The Haunted Bookshop, 15 McKillop St, City, & covers old & new accounts. Cost is $20 per person or $18 concession. Book through The Haunted Bookshop on 03 9670 2585. THis is a great tour and I would highly recommend it.

"Drew Sinton, owner of The Haunted Bookshop, says he knows of about 50 ghosts in the CBD, and more than 100 "personalities without bodies" in suburbia. Five nights a week, dressed from top to toe in black, the articulate occultist runs ghost tours through some of Melbourne's most historical sites...

"What ensues is an underworld experience; a walking, talking exploration through creepy alleys, abandoned buildings and popular night spots. First stop on the spook trail is the Francis Hotel, built in 1854. Looks pretty colourful in the bar there, but step up to the nightclub on the third floor and feel the mood drop. I won't give away too much of the story, suffice to say that 30 years ago a chef there got himself into some pretty hot water.

One haunted habitat down, a multitude to go. It's cold out there, traipsing through the streets, but when the ghosthunter speaks, the last thing on your mind is the weather. Looking oddly like a Catholic priest, reciting from his big black book, there's a hush of awe from his eager followers. I ask the man who talks to ghosts if many sceptics come along for the ride.

"Our groups consist of about 50 per cent believers, and 50 per cent sceptics, but that's fine with me because I spin it right down the middle."

This man is on a quest for knowledge, and he teaches the same.

"What is truth to you, is not truth to everyone," explains Sinton.

"To a psychologist, a ghost may be a manifestation of energy which suggests that personality transcends death. To a spiritualist, a ghost is someone who has simply lived, loved and died. To a psychiatrist, such as Elizabeth Kubler Ross, a ghost is like a caterpillar shedding its cocoon to become a butterfly. To a sceptic, a ghost is a hallucination, a trick of light, an auto-suggestion or just poor memory."

And who is the final arbitrator?

"You are!" spouts Sinton, clearly frustrated by those who are always seeking advice from "the officials".

"To a believer, no proof is necessary; to a sceptic, no proof is possible."
