I believe that ghosts are the residual energy that is left behind when a person dies in a way that is not natural. I also believe this energy can harbor anger or sadness with it that keeps it in a sort of a loop. When no one is there or is there but unable to break the loop, the persons spirit can not truely move on.

Here is the truth; they are most certainly real. I moved in to a house and learned that we are not alone. In fact I'm sitting next to   where the person hanged herself in my garage.

Ghosts are certainly real. However, the jury is still out on whether or not what we think of as ghosts are actually the spirits of the dead, or if they're something else. Heck, there's even evidence to support the idea that ghosts might be nothing more than an expression of psychic phenomena.

As to whether or not they exist, we have well over a century of photographic evidence to support their existence, from vague and shadowy shapes to full apparitions of people who were known to already be dead. Over the past 75 years, we also have images on video, and disembodied voices on both analog and digital recordings, both that were heard by people in the room and that weren't (and, in some cases, voices that weren't intended to be captured).

In addition to this physical evidence, we have thousands of accounts that corroborate this kind of evidence independently, as well as reproducible and intelligent results.

This all leads us to believe that there are, in fact, unseen beings who occasionally get seen, unheard beings who occasionally get heard, and millions upon millions of believers who support one, the other, or both because of correlatable personal experience.

This belief is not scientific evidence, however, because most scientists are not willing to put serious time into either supporting or debunking these claims, instead deciding that it's irrational to believe in ghosts without actually examining the evidence (an act which, by definition, is irrational rejection).

The reason for this is that there are thousands (and possibly millions) of people who use the unseen world expressly for entertainment purposes, or to swindle money and power away from people. In spite of tenuous evidence to support it (as I said, no serious study has been supported by the scientific community), psychic phenomena are also largely discredited because people are likewise using it to control people or their money.

But if there is going to be any serious study, the scientific community has to wake up as a whole and accept that it doesn't have all of the facts (and the ones it does have are largely mishandled by people with no scientific training or understanding of how evidence might be contaminated). There are some good ideas being presented in quantum theory (particularly with regard to parallel universe theorems) that might explain such phenomena, but I personally think that science is simply too scared (a rationalized decision to support an emotional position is no basis for science).

The evidence is there, but until science seriously looks at it and does its own studies to determine how factual this evidence might be, it's going to be very easy indeed to be polarized on this issue (i.e., choosing one side or the other, both of which show emotional bias). The only rational decision is to suspend judgment and investigate until the truth is known.

Therefore, your answer to this is that ghosts are potentially both real and made up, because we simply don't know enough about the mechanics of what makes people see them (and it's certainly NOT superstition, as I was a complete non-believer when I started, and now I believe something's there, though I don't know for sure what).
