Giacomo Castagna eases past Roberto Franchin to advance into the main draw – Guzzini Challenger 2011
In an all Italian match, Giacomo Castagna slew Roberto Franchin with a breadstick at the Guzzini Challenger, held annually at the Circolo Tennis Francesco Guzzini in Recanati, Italy, since 2003. He registered a 6-1, 6-3 victory
over his compatriot to advance into the main draw on Saturday.
Castagna displayed tremendous skills and attributes to down his countryman in three quarter of an hour on their first meeting. He not only advance in this event but also took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against Franchin.
The winning Italian stormed into the opening set and fished out easy points to seal the opener with a breadstick. With his amazing defensive skills, he was never threatened nor faced any breakpoint. However, Castagna capitalised
on three out of four breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to bag the set by winning six games to one. He took full advantage of the five double faults and several unforced errors his rival committed and produced a magnificent first serve share of 71 percent
as compared to Franchin’s 34 percent. The Italian then put the cherry on the set by registering a perfect win on his first serve share.
He carried his momentum into the final set and smoothly held his opening serve. Later, he failed to save the only breakpoint conceded but with the help from his exquisite forehands, the Italian cashed in both breakpoint opportunities
to his advantage to clinch the set with a 6-3 win. Castagna committed equal number of double faults and many unforced errors but covered it up by producing a higher first serve share of 68 percent as compared to Franchin’s 48 percent. He also earned a magnificent
84 percent win on it.
Fourth seeded Mexican Manuel Sanchez will be joining the Italian in the next round. He outclassed a local star, Nicolo Vaccarini in straight sets. Sanchez failed to fend off the only breakpoint faced but converted half of the six
breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to seal the match with a 6-4, 7-5 score line in one hour and eight minutes.
