Gianluca Guidi has announced Italy A’s 28 member squad for the Churchill Cup – Rugby news
Italy A’s head coach, Gianluca Guidi, has announced his 28 member squad ahead of the 2011 Churchill Cup competition starting on June 4. The Italian made the announcement about his squad on Monday, May 30 to a press conference.
Italy A is placed in Pool B of the Cup alongside Canada, Italy and Russia. The host team, England Saxons, USA and Tonga are also participating in the Churchill Cup tournament.
Italy A will play their first match of the 2011 Churchill Cup against last year’s runner up Canada on June 4, at Franklin Gardens, Northampton. They play their second match against the Russians on June 12, at Kingsholm Stadium, Gloucester.
Gianluca Guidi announced the team after observing the performances of certain fresh faces in Italy A’s encounter against the XV Della Serenissima on Sunday, May 29. Serenissima is an invitational rugby union club situated in the Italy’s North East. After
the match, the coach said, “But both me and De Carli are pleased by the way the youngsters performed in yesterday's game. It is crucial for their growth to compete in a top level tournament like the Churchill Cup.” Italy A comprehensively defeated the Serenissima
24 – 0 at San Donà, Venice.
The team announced by Guidi includes 15 uncapped players which include eight Under-20 academy players and two Under-18 academy players. This includes the 17-year-old Ruggers Tarvisium’s winger Angelo Esposito who impressed everyone with his exceptional display
of skills and abilities on Sunday after he was able to score two tries in the match.
Andrea Bacchetti, Rovigo’s winger is making a comeback in to the national side after a lapse of two years. He last played in the 2009 Six Nations tournament. Andrea secured a place in the 28-man squad following his impressive performance during the season
and particularly in the final of the Italian Championship.
Commenting on the selection of the Andrea in the side, Guide remarked, “Andrea played an amazing final and he deserved the call.”
Benetton Treviso’s lock Valerio Bernabo will captain the side during the 2011 Churchill Cup.
